Ballast Point Grapefruit Sculpin IPA
Today we are following up on the previous Craft Corner, with a fruity - dare I say exciting - spin on Ballast Point's Sculpin IPA.
Brewery & Location: Ballast Point (San Diego)
Beer: Grapefruit Sculpin IPA
Color: light amber
Class: American India Pale Ale (IPA)
Overall Impressions: Don't mistake this for an easily drank fruity delight; it's an IPA before it's a fruit beer. (This is in contrast to, for example, Dogfish Head's ApriHop which leans more on its fruit flavors.) The Grapefruit Sculpin has all the hoppiness of an IPA plus the added punch of grapefruit, giving it a pretty strong and zestily bitter flavor. Some will find this objectionable, but if you don't object, you'll likely really enjoy this.
When to Drink It: With its citrusy kick, this is a perfect brunch beer.
Best Paired With: Slightly less versatile than the standard Sculpin thanks to the subtle fruity flavor. Best with savory breakfast food.
Value and/or Availability: Year-round, nationwide. The Grapefruit Sculpin is a worthy special occasion beer that stands out from the crowd of IPAs. Its citrus tang builds on Sculpin's existing strengths to provide something really exceptional and worth the splurge.
